The American Beech Tree
This plant is actually a tree, it grows in the deciduous forests of Maine and Massachusetts. This tree is very tall ranging from 90 to 100 feet and wide ranging from 50 to 70 feet. It grows best in deep, well drained, rich soils which is what all of these deciduous forests have.
Carpet Moss
Carpet Moss covers the ground that's why it is called carpet moss and starts out golden brown and then turns to a darker green as it gets older. This carpet moss grows in eastern North America and Europe.
The Lime/Linden Tree
This tree grows in Europe, the British Isles and in the United States. This tree can live up to 500 years and grow up to be 130 feet tall. Furthermore, sweetly scented flowers hang from the branches and fruits can be collected from inside of them. Also this tree has a material inside of it that is like gelatin that when applied to our skin reduces irritation from rashes and other skin conditions.
The Guelder Rose Flower
This plant grows in Scotland England and the United States. It prefers to grow at low altitudes and is wheel shaped ranging from 3 to 5 inches across. this flower has outer leaves that are sterile and inner leaves that the insects go to for nectar. These flowers grow 5 to 10 feet tall and at an early age the leaves are white but the flowers turn into berries. The flower is beautiful in August when the berries are ripe but then the leaves turn to a bright red or rich purple before falling.
The Northern Arrow-wood Shrub
These plants have oval shaped leaves that are dark green with spiky edges and a smooth surface. This shrub also has small white to pink flowers that bloom from May to June. This shrub also produces berries that the deer and chipmunks like to eat. It is found growing from places such as New Brunswick and Ontario to New York, Ohio and Michigan.
The Pecan Tree
This type of tree can grow to 180 feet tall. The tree uses the wind to pollinate and is perennial. Furthermore, it creates the pecan nut which is long and pointed with a thin shell. This tree used to be a major source of food for Native Americans and now the Pecan industry produces 250,000,000 pounds of pecans a year. This tree grows here in North America and is the Texas state tree.
The Shagbark Hickory Tree
This tree can grow up to 100 feet tall and its branches extend to make it 25 feet wide on each side. The bark on this tree is separated into long strips which cause it too have a shaggy look hence the name. Furthermore, this tree has both male and female flowers, the male ones are called catkins and the female ones are called petallets.
The White Birch Tree
The White Birch tree can grow to be 70-80 feet tall which is not very tall for a tree and lives up to 140 years. However, the interesting things about this tree are that it is the first tree to grow back in places that have been destroyed by fire and it can grow in places where other trees have been cut down already. Also its bark is still able to burn when it is wet, and its sap is used to make beer, wine, syrup, and medical tonics. This tree can be found in Newfoundland, Labrador, Canada, New, England and places like North Carolina in the United States.
The White Oak Tree
This tree can grow from 80-100 feet tall, up to 4 feet in diameter, and the branches can spread from 50-80 feet wide. This tree can live from 500-600 years long depending on if it is disturbed by human forces. The oak tree's seed are acorns which are eaten by squirrels, chipmunks, and deer. When the white oak is a seedling it creates a tap root. This is a root that plunges deep into the ground to get the tree water when there is a drought and it really needs it. This eventually disappears with time. This tree is valued to make many timber products such as furniture and heavy construction. This tree is the most common tree species of the Eastern United States.
